WHAT: The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) holds its 14th Annual Lineman's Rodeo and Family Festival. WHO: Sixty teams of journeyman and apprentice electric distribution mechanics (known as linemen) from public and private power companies throughout Southern California and other Western states compete in this event, which showcases the safety techniques, skill and speed of power utility workers. WHEN: Saturday, May 14, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. WHERE: Truesdale Training Center 11760 Truesdale St. in Sun Valley (Thomas Guide Page 502, F-6) VISUALS: Linemen will compete in exciting and entertaining contests such as the "Egg Speed Climb" in which they must carry a raw egg in their mouth (and not break it) while speed climbing down a 40-foot power pole. Other competitions include a hurt-person rescue, changing out cross-arms and switching equipment while atop power poles, and more. WHY: The Lineman's Rodeo offers a chance for linemen to test their skills by engaging in friendly competition, and for their families to see first-hand what this challenging work is all about. Winning teams will compete at the national Lineman's Rodeo finals in Kansas City, Mo., later this year. DETAILS: Family activities will include games, prizes, a petting zoo, safety exhibits, displays, raffles, live music and food. The event is also an expo for electrical utility vendors to display and sell the latest tools, equipment, bucket trucks, and climbing gear. The event is sponsored by LADWP and IBEW Local 18 Union for Electrical Field Crews in Los Angeles. COPYRIGHT 2005 Business Wire Orignal Article Location
